Top 4 in Rome
I want to share my favorites sightsing spots from our trip to Rome in Italy. Keep in mind that our trip was quite a few years ago, so maybe my facts are a bit outdated, feel free to call me out.
Fontana di Trevi, back in 2013.
Let’s start off with one of the biggest tourist sights ever, but after seeing the amazing architecture I can totally understand why. According to the legend, you are supposed to drink a thirst-quenching glass of water from the Trevi fountain and that would give you good fortune and make sure that you would return to Rome. Fortunately, the saying has evolved beyond drinking in the fountain, can you imagine the sigh of all tourist cramming into the fountain trying to have a sip?
You are supposed to stand with your back against the fountain, toss a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain to ensure your return to Rome. So did we do that, yes. Have we returned, no. Not yet, but I am sure that we will someday.
Have you tossed a coin in the Trevi fountain?
Let’s talk iconic!
But before you enter Castel Sant Angelo, make sure that you walk over the bridge Ponte Sant Angelo to check out the Nine angels. That’s quite a good start on the Sant Angelo tour. I would recommend you start at the top of the massive circular building, where they have a small cafe with a stunning view. I mean, how can you visit Rome and not have a glass of wine on top of the Castel? That’s iconic!
Oh so pretty. This giant marble building was built to honor the first king of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II. He must have been quite the man, cuz the building is massive. Huge ever. There no missing it if you are in any proximity to Piazza Venezia.
It’s not a building that I got closer to, but I am sure happy that I turned around on my journey to find a glass of wine, and found myself starring at this majestic view as the sun was about to set.
Well yes, the basilica is beautiful, but the one thing that made it so memorable is the view from the top of St Peters Dome. I mean, check out the image above, or better yet, click on the link and you’ll even more images that we took from the top. It’s amazing, right?
If you only had a short layover in Rome and only had time to do one thing, I would recomend this. This view is nothing short of amazing, where ever you turn theres a new view of Rome, one even more beautiful than the other.
So this was my Top 4 in Rome when it comes to sightsing and buildings. But naturally, there is so much more to see and experience in Rome than these four places. We did walk around a lot in the city, and as always when we travel – yes, we did get lost in Rome as well. Not bad lost though, but still lost.
What are your favorite sites in Rome?

I love the Colleseum and the Vatican but with so many monuments to choose from it’s a hard one. I have thrown a penny in the Trevi fountain and returned so maybe it does work!

I have been to Rome many times & thrown a coin in the Trevi Fountain (thankful we don’t have to drink the water anymore!). That was until last time when the crowds were so big that they had barriers all around so you couldn’t get close…so who knows when I will next return! My favourite place to visit is the Pantheon. I can’t explain why but I always find something magical about the place.
Jan
Yes,I have been to Rome many years ago. My favorite place is the Trevi Fountain. I don’t know what good luck comes to you or what the significance is, but I have thrown a coin there. đ

For some reason I’ve never been enticed by Italy, but I felt that about Spain, France, and Greece .. and within the past year I’ve been surprised by all of them, so maybe it’s only a matter of time until I venture on to Italian soil for a closer look.
Peggy Cleveland
Great brief overview. It is so interesting how travelers have such a different perspective on a destination. I did love the Trevi fountain. So iconic.

Your post reminded me of my visit to this eternal city. I walked for almost 11 hours during Christmas and I loved almost everything about it. The people, the crowd, buildings, its history, and of course Gelato!
